Join the Stand Up campaign!

21 February 2010

This year, the Stand up campaign has been moved to 17-19 September to coincide with the beginning of a major summit on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). World leaders will gather at the United Nations in New York for the Millennium Development Goals Review Summit as it has been ten years since the MDGs were adopted by 189 heads of state and governments.

We will no longer stay seated or silent in the face of poverty and the broken promises to end it!

Millennium Campaign

Cook IslandsThe campaign urges everybody to think of creative ways to generate a noise which is also relevant to their particular area or scope of work. The possibilities for creative noise-making are vast! For example: gather citizens in a public space to bang spoons on metal plates as a way of illustrating hunger; or church groups and temples could arrange for their church/temple bells to be rung at the same time on that date in cities across their country…. An online action allowing people to generate a noise through an online and mobile phone application will also be made available.

Last year, 173 million people gathered at over 3,000 events in more than 120 countries, demanding that their governments eradicate extreme poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals. Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in countries including USA, Sudan, Japan, Our Chalet, Pakistan, UAE, Madagascar, and Thailand took part in a variety of ways. Activities ranged from drawing posters to holding demonstrations.
